Die Komödien des Plautus entstanden etwa zwischen 210 und 184 v. Chr., einer Zeit des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs und der militärischen Expansion Roms in Griechenland und Kleinasien. Die griechische Literatur und Kultur erlangten in Rom immer größere Bedeutung.
Plautus Stücke gehören zu den fabulae palliatae: Sie sind römische Komödien „in griechischem Gewand“. Die Geschichten und Charaktere entstammen dem bürgerlichen Milieu und erzählen von Konflikten zwischen Vätern und Söhnen, zwischen Ehepaaren, von verlorenen Töchtern, verliebten jungen (und alten) Männern, von Sklaven und Hetären – um nur einige zu nennen. Angelehnt an Vorlagen der griechischen ‚Neuen Komödie‘, die im späten vierten und dritten Jahrhundert v. Chr. florierte, sind die Stücke in Griechenland, in einer hellenistischen Gesellschaft, angesiedelt. Jedoch schafft Plautus mit subtilen Verweisen auf die römische Lebensrealität ein römisch durchwirktes Griechenland – Plautopolis. In diesem stilisierten griechischen Setting können Konflikte, Spott und Kritik auf die Komödienbühne gebracht und die konventionelle gesellschaftliche Ordnung auf den Kopf gestellt werden ohne das römische Publikum zu brüskieren – denn es ist ja alles griechisch.
Die im Seminar behandelte Komödie Mostellaria handelt von dem adulescens Philolaches, der die Abwesenheit seines Vaters für Partys und den Freikauf seiner Geliebten, der Hetäre Philematium, nutzt. Dafür hat er sich bei einem Geldverleiher Geld geliehen, allerdings spitzt sich die Situation zu, als der Geldverleiher nun die Schulden einfordert und der Vater von seiner Reise nach Hause zurückkehrt. Schnell muss ein Plan her, um dem Vater vom Hause fernzuhalten und alles zu verheimlichen. Kann die Gespenstergeschichte, die sich der schlaue Sklave Tranio ausdenkt, die Situation lösen? Ob das gelingt, erfahren Sie im SoSe 2022…
Im Zentrum des Seminars steht die Lektüre und ausführliche philologische Interpretation ausgewählter Textausschnitte, die Untersuchung zentraler Motive und Gattungselemente eines Bühnenstücks (im Gegensatz zu einem Erzähltext) sowie die Einordnung in den dramatischen Kontext. Grundlegend dafür sind die Nutzung und zielführende Anwendung wissenschaftlicher Hilfsmittel und Methoden der Textanalyse und Textkritik.
Voraussetzung zum Bestehen des Seminars ist die regelmäßige Teilnahme (es besteht Anwesenheitspflicht) sowie mindestens ausreichende Leistungen Abschlussklausur (90 Minuten).
